Scotland End to End is an 800km journey from the far Northwestern corner of Scotland to the opposite end of the country in the Southeast. For me, it was a form of pilgrimage, visiting some of the most spectacular mountains and coastline of Scotland - a sort of 'highlights tour'. The Highland part of the journey follows a rough, sometimes trackless course, linking these highlights. Rather than following established trails, this route goes over the mountain tops, including several scrambles. In the Lowlands, it takes the Fife Coastal Path to the Forth Road Bridge, picking up the John Muir Way at Dalmeny, following this to its end at Dunbar. The John Muir Link and the Berwickshire Coatal Path provide an onward route to the English border and Berwick.
The concept of an ‘end to end’ walk is simple – start at one end of a mountain range, river or island and finish at the other. In April 2024 I embarked on another end-to-end walk from the Land's End to Berwick. This journey was an intentional complement to my England end-to-end walk, and was completed in April 2025 over the course of 22 days walking, although I interupted the journey with a week-long family holiday on the Isle of Uist, which itself felt like part of the whole, representing island Scotland.
There is no guidebook for the route and this web site is intended as a resource for future completions. I had intended to continue the mountain-hopping South of Kinlochleven, but the weather and time constraints meant that I followed the West Highland Way to Crianlarich instead. I regret not including Curved Ridge on the Buachaille Etive Mor, and other possibilities might include the Aonach Eagach, Bidean nam Bian and the Blackmount. This would be more in keeping with the rest of the Highland part of the journey. Please let me know if you plan to walk the route and to provide any feedback by contacting me.
